The production area in Edirne, one of Türkiye's important paddy production centers, increased by 50 thousand decares compared to last year and reached 500 thousand decares.
Farmers, who had difficulties in production last year due to drought and water shortage, are having a more comfortable production period this season with the effect of rains.
While there is no water stress in paddy production due to the increase in dam occupancy rates and river flow rates, a yield of over 400 thousand tons is targeted in the city.
Edirne Agriculture and Forestry Director İslam Köse said in a statement to journalists that paddy cultivation areas in the city increased this year.
Stating that there is no water shortage in production thanks to rainfall, dam occupancy rates and high river flows, Köse said:
"This year, paddy cultivation was carried out on an area of approximately 500 thousand decares. This is a very serious figure. Last year, we achieved 398 thousand tons of production. This year, we aim to exceed 400 thousand tons. The most important reason for this is that we do not experience water stress."
Köse stated that water release has started to the paddy cultivated areas and the development of the products is good.
Stating that there is no problem in terms of disease, Köse said, "If the seasonal conditions are suitable until the end of the season, we expect a production of over 400 thousand tons. Compared to last year, 50 thousand more decares of land were planted." he said.
Paddy producer Mesut Çakır also said that they expect to have a fruitful season this year.
Stating that the rains in the winter months filled the dams, Çakır said, "This year seems to be a compensation for the last two years. We have plenty of water and the development of our products is good. I hope it will be a fruitful year. May God grant everyone the opportunity to harvest their products." he said.
