Göynük Canyon, located in Göynük District of Antalya's Kemer district and hosting thousands of local and foreign tourists every year, witnessed a great disaster today evening.
According to the information provided by Kemer Haber, in the rafting area, where there are caves and water passages in the canyon, a giant rock mass broke off from the slope for an undetermined reason and fell on the visitors below.
According to initial findings, a total of 4 people, 2 Turkish and 2 foreign nationals, were seriously injured when they were directly hit by the falling rock mass. It was learned that approximately 20 visitors who were in the canyon during the incident were injured in various parts due to the flying stones and panic.
Upon notice, many ambulances, AFAD, gendarmerie, UMKE and search and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. Rescue teams reached the region under difficult conditions due to the rugged structure of the canyon and provided first aid to the injured at the scene. The seriously injured were carried to ambulances on stretchers and transferred to various hospitals in Kemer and Antalya.
While gendarmerie teams took extensive security measures at the scene, Göynük Canyon was completely evacuated and closed to visitors as a precaution against the risk of a new landslide or rockfall.
The exact cause of the accident will become clear after investigations by geologists and technical teams. A large-scale investigation was launched by gendarmerie teams regarding the incident.
