Within the framework of the events organized by the Istanbul Governorship within the scope of the 10th anniversary of the 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day, a democracy convoy was formed with the participation of the members of the Istanbul Airport Taxi Drivers Cooperative. The cortege of 253 vehicles, prepared in memory of the 253 people who were martyred on July 15, 2016, departed from Istanbul Airport and ended at Atatürk Airport.
Speaking before the cortege, Istanbul Airport Civil Administrative Chief Assoc. Dr. İlker Haktankaçmaz said, "Today is July 15; 10 years ago today, the day when all members of this nation wrote a heroic epic against that treacherous coup attempt under the leadership of our President. Our taxi drivers were also working at Atatürk Airport at that time. They resisted the coup attempt with their lives and chests, like the heroic sons of this nation, against the coup plotters. The cooperative center of our taxi drivers there became the natural headquarters. Today too "We organized such a convoy to Atatürk Airport with 253 taxis in memory of our 253 martyrs. This is a part of the programs carried out by our Istanbul Governorship throughout the province," he said.
Istanbul Airport Taxi Drivers Cooperative President Fahrettin Can said, "Today is the 10th anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt. Our Istanbul Governorship is organizing this program this year. We also agree with it. May God not let it happen again. Our people shielded their chests until our special operation arrived. They walked to the VIP and the tower without blinking an eye. I congratulate all of them. I congratulate them all. Thank you to our state and our homeland."
