The defendant, who caused the death of his relative by running him over twice with his car during a fight in Samsun, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in the trial. The other defendant tried in the same case was acquitted.

The incident took place on the night of July 9, 2025, behind the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) in Kale District of İlkadım district. According to the information obtained, after a fight broke out between relatives Uğur Yılmaz (33) and Mehmet Kalay (39), who were drinking alcohol together, Uğur Yılmaz hit Mehmet Kalay with the car he was driving. Then, he turned over Kalay, which the vehicle had passed over, and passed it a second time. Mehmet Kalay, who was seriously injured, died despite all the interventions made in the hospital where he was taken.

Following the incident, Uğur Yılmaz, who was learned to have 19 criminal records, and Mevlüt Yılmaz (36), who was involved in a fight, were taken into custody. Uğur Yılmaz, one of the suspects who was referred to the courthouse on July 10 after being processed at the Homicide Bureau, was arrested, while Mevlüt Yılmaz was released on condition of judicial control.

At the decision hearing of the case held today at Samsun 2nd High Criminal Court, the detained defendant Uğur Yılmaz claimed that the incident was a traffic incident and said, "I have 5 children, why should I kill them? My dearest ones. It was definitely a traffic incident. It happened while I was reversing. I looked in front of me, there was no one there, I went again. I didn't deliberately pass over them twice. I couldn't see anything. I got out of the vehicle, I saw there was blood coming out. 6 children were orphaned. If I had killed them on purpose, I would have committed suicide in prison. "I would have killed him. I definitely didn't do it on purpose," he said.

Defendant Mevlüt Yılmaz, who attended the hearing via Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS), said, "I have 5 children. I demand my acquittal."

While the court sentenced the detained defendant Uğur Yılmaz to 18 years in prison, it decided to acquit Mevlüt Yılmaz. -SAMSUN
