The second session of the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Council in July turned into a battlefield with a historical and political polemic. AK Party Group Spokesperson Ahmet Alperen Aydın's words towards the 2nd President of the Republic of Turkey, İsmet İnönü, caused confusion in the parliament. During the fight, in which water bottles were flying in the air, the CHP group left the hall when no apology was made, and the parliament was adjourned.
The tension started with CHP Group Spokesperson Yücel Akbulut's statement, "Do you know why the War of Independence is Independence? It is to get rid of receiving orders and instructions from foreign capitals," referring to the War of Independence.
AK Party Group Spokesperson Ahmet Alperen Aydın, who went to the podium to respond to these words, made the following statements targeting İsmet İnönü, one of the founding staff of the Republic, immediately brought the tension to the top in the parliament: "Sophocles, the son of Greek Prime Minister Venizelos, even went to the Osman Gazi Tomb during the occupation of Bursa and took a photo, and did this arrogance. But a few years later, your second chairman, İsmet İnönü, killed his wife." Did he wear it on Venizelos' arm or not?.. Did he wear it or not?"
A huge brawl broke out in the hall following Aydin's claims. While one of the CHP members was seen throwing a water bottle towards Aydın from the AK Party, Mudanya Mayor Deniz Dalgıç stood up from his desk and reacted very harshly. Dalgıç emphasized that the parliamentary rostrum should not be polluted with the following statements: "Do not pollute this place. Is İsmet İnönü the subject of this place? İsmet İnönü is a real veteran. İsmet İnönü is not a self-proclaimed veteran. You do not become a veteran by calling yourself a veteran. The man fought for his homeland. You cannot become a veteran from a huge tripe. Find yourself another group spokesperson. This is not such a place."
After verbal taunts and attempts at physical intervention, the session was taken into a forced break. In the parliament that reconvened after the break, the CHP group demanded that Aydın from the AK Party apologize for these accusations against historical figures. However, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Şahin Biba's statement, "No one should have any expectations from anyone. This parliament has seen a lot, heard a lot of insults, but no one apologized to anyone" was the last straw. Upon these words, the CHP group left the hall en masse. Since the sufficient majority could not be achieved and the tension did not calm down, the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Council meeting was postponed to 17.00 on Thursday, July 16.
