CARACAS, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 4,930.
Jorge Rodriguez, President of Venezuela's National Assembly, announced on Thursday via social media platform X that 6,462 people were rescued alive from the rubble. According to the statement, 190 of the 856 damaged buildings collapsed, primarily in La Guaira state, which was most affected by the earthquake.
Rodriguez stated that 17,907 people were left homeless after the earthquakes, while 21,210 people are being housed in 107 temporary camps. It was also reported that state aid was provided to more than 128,000 families affected by the earthquakes.
Authorities reported that 1,308 aftershocks occurred following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, which struck 39 seconds apart.
Meanwhile, the government dispatched more than 1,200 health workers to La Guaira state to prevent epidemic diseases in temporary camps.
Venezuela's Ministry of Health continues its activities in coordination with the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization regarding epidemic surveillance, vaccination, and sanitation measures.
