Bursa Technical University (BTU) will develop a new generation bone fixation plate that can be used in the treatment of bone fractures. The material, which is aimed to be lighter, durable and compatible with the human body, will offer an alternative to orthopedic treatments.

Bursa Technical University (BTU) added a new one to its scientific activities in the field of health technologies. Within the scope of the A3 Support Program for Doctoral Students carried out by the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB), the project titled "Hydroxyapatite Added Hybrid Composite Based New Generation Bone Fixation Plate Design", led by BTU PhD student Elif Pesen, was entitled to be supported. The consultancy of the project is Assoc. Prof., faculty member of BTÜ Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Dr. Cihan Kaboğlu undertakes. Within the scope of the project, a new generation bone fixation plate will be developed that can be an alternative to metal plates used in the treatment of bone fractures.

Although the metal plates used today are successful in fixing the bone, from time to time they cannot fully adapt to the bone, which can negatively affect the healing process and cause the need for a second surgery in some patients. This new plate, which is aimed to be lighter, bone compatible and durable, will be produced from an innovative material combining carbon, basalt and natural flax fibers with special additives that support bone structure. In this way, the plate to be developed is intended to be both durable, environmentally friendly and more compatible with the human body.

In the research, a new bone plate with features closer to the natural structure of the bone will be designed by using different materials together. Thus, it is aimed to create a product that will both contribute to the treatment process of patients and offer an innovative solution to orthopedic implant technologies.

With the completion of the project, it is aimed to obtain important scientific outputs in the fields of biomaterials, composite materials, orthopedic implant design and health technologies. It is expected that the new generation bone fixation plates to be developed will contribute to innovative solutions that can be used in orthopedic treatments in the future and support the development of health technologies. The material to be developed at the end of the project is aimed to contribute to the use in the healthcare field as a lighter and longer-lasting alternative that supports the healing process of patients.
