ALMATY, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan Ministry of Defense announced that a peacekeeping team of 11 people has arrived in the country to serve within the United Nations Interim Task Force (UNIFIL) stationed in Lebanon.
According to the ministry's statement on Wednesday, Kazakhstan's 11th peacekeeping unit will serve in the south of Lebanon within the Indian battalion. The union's duties include monitoring compliance with the ceasefire, conducting patrol activities, assessing the security situation, protecting UN facilities, coordinating with local authorities and communities, and participating in humanitarian activities aimed at maintaining regional stability in line with the mandate of the UN Security Council.
The statement stated that Kazakhstan's participation in UN peacekeeping operations continues to be an important part of the country's contribution to international security, which both strengthens Kazakhstan's reputation as a responsible partner in global peace efforts and provides its military personnel with valuable operational experience in multinational missions.
Around 8,500 peacekeeping personnel from approximately 50 countries serve in UNIFIL, which was established by the UN Security Council in 1978. Kazakhstan first sent a 120-person peacekeeping force to UNIFIL in November 2018.
