( ANKARA ) - After the unexpected death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who represented the US state of South Carolina in the Senate, over the weekend, his sister Darline Graham Nordone was appointed as interim senator to complete the remaining part of her term.
Following the unexpected death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced yesterday that his sister Darline Graham Nordone will complete her current term, which will end in January. Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced that Nordone will be sworn in today.
According to the preliminary forensic report, Nordone, the brother of Lindsey Graham, who died due to a rupture in the aorta, will be the first woman to represent South Carolina in the US Senate. Speaking after the appointment, Nordone said, "This is a great honor. Lindsey was always there for me. Now I will be here for her, too."
Governor McMaster said he met with Nordone in the first hours after Graham's death and was impressed by his willingness to accept the position. McMaster also stated that President Donald Trump considered this choice a "great idea."
Graham ran for a fifth term again this year. However, his death sparked intense competition for the seat within the South Carolina Republican Party.
According to South Carolina law, nomination filing will begin on July 21. The special primary will be held on August 11, with a runoff, if necessary, on August 25. The general election will be held on November 3.
