The upcoming match between Spain and Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19 has brought back into public discussion old photographs of Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal together from years ago. The claim that the baby in Messi's arms in the rapidly circulating social media images is Lamine Yamal garnered significant attention.
Following discussions surrounding the photographs, UNICEF issued an official statement confirming the authenticity of the images.
The statement read, "Yes, the photos you see are real. More than 18 years ago, when Lamine Yamal was a baby, he met Lionel Messi during a photoshoot organized for the benefit of UNICEF, alongside his mother Sheila."
UNICEF also emphasized that today, both Messi and Lamine Yamal work as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors to improve the lives of children, stating, "While their achievements on the field inspire millions, off the field they use their voices to advocate for children's rights. We work together for every child to survive, thrive, and reach their full potential. We are proud to have them on our team."
It was stated that the photographs in question were taken in December 2007 as part of a joint fundraising campaign organized by UNICEF and the Barcelona Foundation. Photographer Joan Monfort explained that a lottery was held in the neighborhood where Yamal's family lived for the campaign, and the family that won the lottery participated in the photoshoot.
During the photoshoot, Lionel Messi was 20 years old. Lamine Yamal, then just 5 months old, posed in front of the camera with his mother, Sheila Ebana.
After Spain advanced to the World Cup final, Lamine Yamal was shown the photos taken with Messi years ago. The young star stated, "Yes, I've grown a bit, and I guess Leo has too. I hope this happens. I would love to face Messi in a World Cup final."
Thus, it has been confirmed by UNICEF's statement that the baby in the photographs circulating for years is indeed Lamine Yamal.
