LUSAKA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Zambia has engaged a consortium of five Chinese companies to design, supply and install 2-megawatt solar power plants in each of its 156 constituencies.
The contracts for the tender held within the scope of the Presidential Constituency Energy Initiative were signed at a ceremony held in the capital Lusaka on Tuesday. The initiative aims to increase the country's electricity generation capacity from 3,500 megawatts to 10,000 megawatts by 2030.
Nicholas Phiri, Permanent Secretary for Technical Services at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, stated that the program approved by the cabinet in November last year spearheads the nationwide renewable energy drive aimed at eliminating the structural energy deficit and creating prosperity on a local scale.
