(SİNOP) - Mehmet Kaya (58), a health officer working at the Family Health Center in Sinop's Ayancık district, was beaten by the father of the family he contacted by phone due to his baby's vaccination follow-up. While the medical officer, who suffered a three-part fracture in his cheekbone during the punch attack, was operated on, a judicial investigation was opened into the incident.
According to the information obtained, Mehmet Kaya, who works as a health officer at Ayancık Family Health Center, was allegedly attacked by A.U, who works as a public servant in the same district.
Allegedly, two days before the incident, Mehmet Kaya called his wife at around 22:00 to remind her about the vaccination of A.U's baby, whom he could not reach during working hours, within the scope of vaccination follow-ups, which is mandatory in accordance with the Family Medicine Regulation, but no one answered. After a while, Kaya called the number again and it was A.U. opened it. After reminding them that their babies needed to be vaccinated, Kaya ended the meeting by saying, "I'm sorry to disturb you, but you should come tomorrow."
A.U. He came to the Family Health Center two days later and entered the examination room where Mehmet Kaya was. Here, A.U., who is alleged to have used threatening expressions and implied harassment by saying, "I came to demand accountability for calling my wife at that hour". An argument broke out between Mehmet Kaya and Mehmet Kaya. As the argument escalated, Mehmet Kaya's cheekbone suffered a three-part fracture as a result of A.U's punch.
Mehmet Kaya, who underwent surgery at Samsun City Hospital on July 10 to prevent permanent damage to his face, was given a 10-day rest report.
Following the incident, a judicial process was initiated by applying the "White Code" procedure, which is applied in cases of violence against healthcare workers. Following the completion of the investigation carried out by the Ayancık District Police Department, the file was sent to Ayancık Courthouse on July 13.
Following the incident, union representatives reacted to the attack and asked for deterrent measures to be implemented to prevent violence against healthcare workers. Confederation of Independent Public Servants' Unions (BASK) Sinop Provincial Chairman Hüseyin Ulusoy condemned the attack on BASK member Mehmet Kaya. Ulusoy said, "We will follow up the issue. We stand by our member in all kinds of judicial and administrative investigations. We condemn this attack. We demand that incidents of violence against healthcare workers be prevented."
Birlik Sağlık Sen Chairman Ahmet Doğruyol stated that the incident once again revealed the extent of violence suffered by healthcare workers.
"Our member Mehmet Kaya, who works in Sinop's Ayancık district, was beaten by another public official at the family health center. The reason for the blow was that a child's vaccination was delayed. It is sad that a healthcare worker who was struggling to vaccinate a child was beaten. The child's mother was called regarding the delay in the child's vaccination, but she could not be reached, she was called a second time and this time the child's father said, 'Why are you calling my wife again, why are you calling at this hour?' He beat our member by saying. Unfortunately, violence in healthcare did not stop and could not be stopped. Because deterrent penalties are not given. "We believe that if people who commit violence in healthcare were deprived of public services for a certain period of time or if the announcement of the sentence was not suspended, violence in healthcare would decrease much faster."
